Overcoming loneliness
Loneliness is not simply a state of having few or no friends. Loneliness is a feeling of a lack of communication and connection with others, and a desire to increase connection and communication. Loneliness is different from a state of solitude (which is welcomed aloneness), or social isolation, or simply being alone – it is the emotional feeling arising from a discrepancy between desired and actual social relationships. Loneliness is painful.
Loneliness can, and does, have severe effects on your health, and we provide simple, easy to read, and accurate, accounts of recent research on the poor health effects of loneliness. Some studies estimate loneliness increases the likelihood of death by approximately 1/4.
Then we provide a well studied simple 5 item assessment of your feelings of loneliness, and provide you with detailed advice on how to tackle loneliness through:
- learning to talk with strangers
- learning to reach out and make new-found friends, and
- through a structured series of lessons that address major thinking issues related to loneliness, including negative thoughts about self-worth and how someone feels perceived by others, including irrational, self-defeating, and self-blame thoughts.
